FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
One of the founding faculty of the Shepherd School of Music will talk about its beginnings and evolution at the Nov. 29 Scientia lecture. Anne Schnoebelen, the Mullen Professor Emeritus of Musicology, will present the talk, “Sallie’s Gift: The Shepherd School of Music — Beginnings and Evolution,” at 4 p.m. in McMurtry Auditorium at Duncan Hall.
Schnoebelen will outline the prehistory of the school, from the initial gift of Sallie Shepherd Perkins, to its actual opening in 1975 and will discuss the challenges faced in the early years, the contributions of the deans and the successes that have brought the school to its present standing as one of the premier music schools in America.
The theme of this year’s Scientia lecture series is “Rice: A Century of Change.” The evolution of Rice from a small, regional institute to a major research university is rooted in the vision of its various presidents and trustees, the ingenuity and insight of its faculty and the generosity of its supporters. In this centennial series, Scientia is looking at the decisive events that shaped the university in its first century and exploring the emerging fields of research that will shape the future of Rice.
