Forbes picks four Owls for ‘30 under 30’

Forbes Magazine had a special gift for four Rice University alumni during the holidays when it announced its annual compendium of “30 under 30” in various disciplines.

Noted among “people who aren’t waiting to reinvent the world” are Rizia Bardhan ’10, Cary Pint ’10, Jeff Bishop ’04 and David Berry ’05.

Bardhan, who earned her Ph.D. in chemistry at Rice in the lab of Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor of chemistry, physics and bioengineering, is a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Bardhan has worked on topics ranging from the development of nanoscale particles that can both diagnose and treat diseases, such as cancer, to nanoparticles that can efficiently store energy.

Her husband, Pint, who earned his Ph.D. in applied physics in the lab of Robert Hauge, distinguished faculty fellow in chemistry, is a research scientist with Intel’s Extreme Technologies Research Group. There he’s developing new, efficient energy devices for a range of applications and technologies that follow from an initiative he began at Rice utilizing carbon nanotubes.

Bishop is vice president of business development at EDP Renewables in Houston. The company develops, constructs, owns and operates renewable generation facilities throughout the United States and abroad. Bishop has worked on wind projects in Morocco, Spain, Botswana and the United States. He earned a Rice degree in electrical engineering and was a member of Sid Richardson college.

Berry is vice president of Clean Line Energy Partners in Houston. The company is developing a series of high-voltage direct current transmission lines that will deliver thousands of megawatts of renewable power from the windiest areas of the United States to communities and cities that have a strong demand for clean, reliable energy but lack access to clean energy resources. Berry earned his Rice degree in economics and history and was a member of Baker College.
