Houston architecture rocks: 2012 AIA winners announced
Rice’s Brockman Hall for Physics, the InHouse OutHouse, a Rice student architecture project, and veloCity, a project by alumnus Peter Muessig ’11, received American Institute of Architects Houston 2012 Architecture Design Awards. Brockman Hall is pictured in the second slide in the Houston Business Journal photo slideshow. The InHouse OutHouse is on slide 17 and veloCity appears on slide 18. Muessig and alumni Andrew Daley ’11 and Jason Fleming ’11 designed the InHouse OutHouse.

Nano ‘starfruit’ may be imaging gold
They look like fruit, and indeed the nanoscale stars of new research at Rice University have tasty implications for medical imaging and chemical sensing. Starfruit-shaped gold nanorods synthesized by chemist Eugene Zubarev and Leonid Vigderman, a graduate student in Zubarev’s lab at Rice’s BioScience Research Collaborative, could nourish applications that rely on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Zubarev is quoted. Stephan Link, assistant professor of chemistry and of chemical and biomolecular engineering, is mentioned.

Transparent 3-D chips to power next-generation computers
Transparent and flexible memory chips that can shrug off temperatures twice as hot as a kitchen oven and survive other hostile conditions are likely to usher in the next-generation keychain drives, cellphones and computers. James Tour, the T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry and professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science, is quoted.
