Student creativity was on display at the Rice Media Center this week when entries in the 2012 Rice Student Film Contest were screened. Almost $4,000 in prizes was given to the top entries for documentaries, fiction, animation and short films.
Sid Richardson College senior Adrien Pellerin won the $1,000 grand prize with his entry “The Leronda Howell Presentation,” a 10-minute film about Austin documentary filmmaker Leronda Howell. This film also earned Pellerin the award for best film in the documentary category, and his “Space Alien Chicken” earned an honorable mention in the short film category.
The People’s Choice Award went to Lovett College senior Jennifer Dayrit and Duncan College junior Ciara Ayala for “Some Call It Love.” They were also runners-up in the short film category.
Other winners were:
- Best film, fiction: Will Rice College junior Veronica Saron for “Cyber Zowlmbie.” Saron also was a runner-up for her documentary, “String Bass.”
- Best short film: Duncan College junior Matthew Koby for “The Inner Child.”
- Best animation: Brown College junior Alison Chang for “Metamorphosis.”
The runner-up in the fiction category was Jones College senior Ryan Oringer for “Normalcy”; Brown College senior Michael Peron earned an honorable mention for “Red Card.” The Lovett College senior Aida Luu earned an honorable mention for her short film, “It’s Okay.”
