Former Owls pitcher Philip Humber’s jersey number at Rice — 21 — may have been prophetic: He became the 21st Major League player to throw a perfect game Saturday. The 29-year-old starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox retired 27 out of 27 batters at Safeco Field in Seattle and enabled the White Sox to beat the Seattle Mariners 4-0. Humber was named American League Player of the Week for the milestone. During his college career from 2002 to 2004, Humber was a three-time All-American and national co-freshman of the year. He was also the winning pitcher for the Owls when they won the 2003 national title game against Stanford.
