Patricia Reiff, professor of physics and astronomy and associate director of outreach at the Rice Space Institute, captured video of the solar eclipse May 20 from Albuquerque, N.M. The eclipse was visible across most of the United States and Canada. Along a narrow path from Northern California to northwestern Texas, viewers saw what’s known as an annular eclipse, or “ring of fire,” when the rim of the sun completely encircles the dark moon. This was the first annular eclipse seen from the United States since 1994.
