Rice mathematician and champion of underrepresented minorities in the sciences Richard Tapia will be a guest on KTRK-TV’s “Viva Houston” this Sunday, June 17, at 11:30 a.m. on Channel 13.
This community affairs program celebrates Houston’s vibrant Hispanic culture, and Tapia will discuss the importance of encouraging Hispanic youth to pursue interests in science and engineering.
Tapia is a University Professor, the Maxfield-Oshman Professor in Engineering and a professor of computational and applied mathematics (CAAM). Last year President Barack Obama presented him with the National Medal of Science – the highest honor bestowed upon a scientist by the U.S government — “for his pioneering and fundamental contributions in optimization theory and numerical analysis and for his dedication and sustained efforts in fostering diversity and excellence in mathematics and science education.”
