Students gathered on the intramural fields Aug. 30 for Sammy’s Picnic, a collaboration among Rice Athletics, the Student Association and Housing and Dining to promote campuswide athletics. In addition to food, there were carnival-themed games, obstacle courses and a hotdog-eating contest leading up to the Owls’ football season opener against UCLA, which was broadcast on national television. The Owls were defeated by UCLA 49-24.
