Americans will honor the men and women who have served the country on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Rice will host a special ceremony to recognize the more than 100 veterans among its faculty, staff and students Nov. 9 at 11:30 a.m. in Rice Memorial Center’s Ray Courtyard.
This year’s ceremony will be emceed by Terry Goree, an electrician in Facilities Engineering and Planning, and will feature remarks by Dr. James “Red” Duke, trauma surgeon and director of Life Flight at Memorial Hermann Hospital; Jimmy Battista, an MBA student in the Jones Graduate School of Business; and Naval ROTC midshipman Carol Nordman.
The 2012 honoree will be Harold Hyman, the William P. Hobby Professor Emeritus of History, who served during Word War II with the United States Marine Corps. Music will be provided by the MOB. Frederick Ballentine Jr., a graduate student in the Shepherd School of Music, will sing the national anthem.
The ceremony will also recognize the Veterans in Business Association, undergraduate and graduate students and alumni of Rice who are committed to serving students and the Houston community through charitable veteran and military service organizations.
Employees and students who are veterans are invited to wear their uniforms. All members of the Rice community are welcome to attend.
If it’s raining, the ceremony will be moved to Rice Chapel.
