Rice mourns loss of longtime staff member Carole Speranza

Carole Speranza, department administrator for Anthropology, died Nov. 24 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston following a brief illness.

Speranza joined the department in 1992 and had planned to retire from Rice next month. She was a parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston and enjoyed sports (especially baseball) and collecting butterflies.

Survivors include her nephew, Anthony Morotta and niece and nephew-in-law, Claudine and Anthony Duque.

A memorial service was held Nov. 27 in Houston.
