Rice University to host TEDxHouston Oct. 12

Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, Shepherd School of Music, Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies and Office of Public Affairs will host TEDxHouston Oct. 12 in Stude Concert Hall at the Shepherd School.

TEDx is a branch of TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design), a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth sharing.” The organization hosts annual conferences in the U.S. and abroad that bring together thinkers and doers from around the world who are challenged to give “the talk of their lives” (aka “TED talks”) in 18 minutes or less. TEDxHouston was created to help introduce Houston’s “ideas worth sharing” to a local and global audience.

“The long history of innovation, community and entrepreneurship at Rice has our creative team fired up with ideas on how to make this fourth year a truly momentous one,” said Javier Fadul, a curator of TEDxHouston. “Once again this year, TEDxHouston will reach out to a broad spectrum of Houstonians to uncover local ideas from people who are working on exciting projects with a major impact on our community and its future. The team will also work on crafting an engaging theme and related activities to make this year’s TEDxHouston conference as vibrant and impactful as the city we represent.”

“We are very excited about the collaboration between Rice’s community of researchers, educators and students and the extended TEDxHouston network that has been connecting and reconnecting through the years,” said Linda Thrane, vice president for public affairs at Rice. “Rice welcomes fresh ideas and divergent points of view, and our campus is a welcoming place to bring this city’s innovators together. Get ready for some ‘aha’ moments!”

Rice University faculty members Anthony Brandt, Stephen Klineberg and Jeffrey Kripal were among the experts invited to speak at the 2012 TEDxHouston. For more information or to view their lectures, visit http://bit.ly/10IRItM.
