‘Cultures of Energy’ brings together leading energy, environmental and humanities scholars at Rice April 19-21

HOUSTON – (April  16, 2013) – Leading local, national and international scholars working at the intersection of energy, the environment and the humanities will gather at Rice University April 19-21 for the second annual Cultures of Energy Spring Symposium.

Who: Leading local, national and international scholars in energy, the environment and the humanities. Constance Penley, professor of film and media studies and co-director of the Carsey-Wolf Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will give the keynote talk on “The Environmental Media Initiative: Transforming Communication and Collaboration among the Sciences, Humanities, Industry and the Public.”

What: Second annual Cultures of Energy Spring Symposium.

When: Friday, April 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. (opening panel and keynote talk); Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.; and Sunday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Rice University, Fondren Library, Kyle Morrow Room, 6100 Main St. The April 19 opening panel and keynote will take place in the Rice Student Center’s Farnsworth Pavilion.

Established in 2011, Rice University’s Cultures of Energy initiative is an interdisciplinary platform for promoting humanities research and teaching related to energy and the environment. It was established with seed funding from Rice’s Humanities Research Center and is currently being supported by a Sawyer Seminar grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
