Two Rice alumni have received “teacher of the year” honors from Houston Independent School District (HISD).
Kay Kubena ’84 was selected from 12,000 HISD teachers as one of two 2013 Teachers of the Year. She has a B.S. in electrical engineering from Rice. Kubena has been teaching math for nearly 30 years and currently teaches advanced placement (AP) statistics, pre-AP precalculus and algebra I at Bellaire High School.
Albert Wei ’12 was named HISD’s 2013 High School Outstanding Beginning Teacher of the Year. He has a B.A. in political science from Rice and teaches government and economics to juniors and seniors at Sharpstown High School through Teach For America. Last year Wei won Rice’s Salman Khan Commencement Award for Entrepreneurial Community Leadership for his efforts to improve education.
