Follow along with a Rice University-led voyage to research the Galicia rift via the team’s daily blog at www.galicia3d.blogspot.com. The research team led by Rice geologist Dale Sawyer departed Vigo, Spain, June 1 onboard the Seismic Vessel Marcus G. Langseth, which is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
The international team is spending 45 days in the North Atlantic to gather information about the ocean basin that formed at what was once the center of Pangaea. Rice geologist Julia Morgan, who is not on the research cruise, is a co-leader of the project, along with Donna Shillington of Columbia University.
Sawyer and Morgan are professors of Earth science at Rice.
