William Arnold, professor in the practice of energy management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, was appointed to a two-year term on the founding energy advisory committee of Lloyd’s Register, the 250-year-old London-based maritime classification and independent risk-management firm. The energy advisory committee’s mission is to provide advice on critical industry issues to Lloyd Register’s energy director.
The Houston Business Journal named Tony Castilleja ’09 as one of its “40 Under 40” young professionals for 2013. Castilleja, who holds a complimentary appointment at the Rice Center for Engineering Leadership, founded the DREAM (Designing with Rice Engineers, an Achievement through Mentorship) program at Rice. This program strives to increase the number of underrepresented minority students earning undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields through team-based, high school mentoring. Rice students studying STEM and related fields serve as mentors for small teams of high school students.
Lars Lerup, Rice’s Harry K. and Albert K. Smith Professor of Architecture, delivered the keynote address at the Symposium for Health and Design in Lake Como, Italy, Sept. 28. Lerup’s talk was titled “Thoughts from Below: Design and the Rethinking of Health Care.”
Steve Murdock, the Allyn R. and Gladys M. Cline Professor in Sociology and director of the Hobby Center for the Study for Texas, was recognized by the International Conference on Aging in the Americas at its annual meeting at the University of Texas-Austin. He received the organization’s annual award for his contributions to the demographic analysis of Hispanic populations.
