Shepherd School to present first symphony orchestra concert of the season

The Shepherd School’s acclaimed Symphony Orchestra will offer its first performance of the academic year at 8 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5 in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall. Larry Rachleff, director of orchestras and the Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Music, will conduct the performance.

The evening’s program will feature a performance of Manuel de Falla’s “Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 2”; Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35,” featuring violinist Yi Zhao, a member of the Shepherd School’s inaugural class of Artist Diploma students; and Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98,” a piece that Rachleff calls “a mainstay of the classical repertoire and an emotional ride for the audience.”

“It’s a great opportunity for the Rice community to come and hear our remarkable students, who are among the most elite musicians of their age anywhere,” Rachleff said.

Admission (reserved seating) is $12 for the general public and $10 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call 713-348-8000.
