Three alumni authors to discuss their books

Karen Kossie-Chernyshev

Three Rice University alumni will discuss their books as part of the Rice Alumni Writers Workshop Series on three nights in November. The lectures are free and open to the public, and each will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Fondren Library’s Kyle Morrow Room.

Karen Kossie-Chernyshev ’85 will discuss “Recovering Five Generations Hence: The Life and Writing of Lillian Jones Horace” Nov. 6. Kossie-Chernyshev’s book explores the significance of Lillian Horace’s contributions to African-American literature and history in Texas and beyond. Horace is Texas’ and perhaps the South’s earliest-known African-American woman novelist.

Hector Ruiz

Former Rice trustee Hector Ruiz ’73 will discuss “Slingshot: AMD’s Fight to Free an Industry from the Ruthless Grip of Intel” Nov. 12. His dramatic and inspirational book tells the story of the Advanced Micro Devices v. Intel legal battle over the global investigation into Intel’s anticompetitive business practices. The book also explores the roles of minorities in American industry.

Sarah Cortez

Sarah Cortez ’72 will discuss “Cold Blue Steel” Nov. 19. Her book contains 50 lyric poems set in the world of the urban street copy in Houston. It allows the reader to experience the hard realities and unexpected luminosities of one of America’s most dangerous jobs.

The Nov. 6 event is sponsored by the Society of Rice University Black Alumni and Community Relations in the Office of Public Affairs. The Nov. 12 and 19 events are sponsored by the Society of Latino Alumni of Rice and Community Relations in the Office of Public Affairs.
