‘Bridging the Gap’ to explore connections among medicine, humanities and social sciences

Leading local and national experts in the areas of health, medicine, the humanities and social sciences will gather at Rice University’s BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) Nov. 2 for the inaugural Rice Medical Humanities symposium on “Bridging the Gap.”

The symposium will expose attendees to a variety of fields that bridge the gap between medicine, the humanities and social sciences, event organizers said. It will also provide an opportunity for networking and career exploration.

Presented by the student-run Rice Medical Humanities organization, the event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the BRC’s auditorium. Keynote speakers will be Dr. Audrey Shafer, a Stanford University professor of anesthesia and director of Stanford’s Arts, Humanities and Medicine Program, and Amy McGuire, the Leon Jaworski Professor of Biomedical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine and director of Baylor’s Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy. “Bridging the Gap” is supported by Rice’s Humanities Research Center, Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering and the Texas Medical Center’s Institute for Spirituality and Health.

The symposium is free and open to Rice students, faculty and staff as well as Houston-area professionals. Registration is required at https://signup.rice.edu/medicalhumanities. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided for a $10 registration fee for students and $20 for professionals.
