Leading American sociologist Annette Lareau to speak at Rice Nov. 14

Annette Lareau, the Stanley I. Sheerr Term Professor in the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Sociology, will give a talk on the intersections of race, class and child rearing in America as part of the Gray/Wawro Lecture Series Nov. 14 at Rice University.

Lareau’s talk, “Class, Race and Childrearing: Unequal Childhoods and Unequal Adulthoods,” will be at 6 p.m. in Sewall Hall, Room 301. A reception will follow in the adjacent Sewall Hall foyer.

Lareau is the author of “Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race and Family Life” (2001), which won a distinguished publication award from three different sections of the American Sociological Association (ASA). In 2011, a second edition of “Unequal Childhoods” was published with 100 new pages that revisit the children of the original study a decade later as they enter adulthood. Lareau also is the author of “Home Advantage: Social Class and Parental Intervention in Elementary Education” (2000).

She has been a residential fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City.  She is currently president of the ASA.

Through the support of Melanie Gray and Mark Wawro, this lecture series recognizes health as a matter of physical and social well-being and highlights gender as a key factor determining opportunity and quality of life. Each lecture brings to Houston a leading scholar whose work inspires deeper understanding of the gender features underlying urgent health concerns and fosters public conversation that can prompt informed action toward a more just world.
