Shepherd School alumna wins Grammy

American musician and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw ’04 and members of her ensemble, A Roomful of Teeth, won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. The ensemble performed during the pre-telecast part of the 56th Grammy Awards, which were held in Los Angeles Jan. 26.

Shaw had also been nominated in the Best Contemporary Classical Composition category for her work “Partita for Eight Voices,” which received the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in music.

Shaw performs violin with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble; she also is a vocalist with A Roomful of Teeth. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in 2004 from Rice, where she was a student of Kathleen Winkler, the Dorothy Richard Starling Chair of Classical Violin at the Shepherd School of Music. She also received a master’s degree from Yale University in 2007 and a Ph.D. in composition from Princeton in 2011.
