Shepherd School orchestra to present preview of East Coast tour Feb. 8 and 13

Rice University’s Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra will give Houston fans a sneak preview of its upcoming East Coast tour with concerts Feb. 8 and 13 in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall.

The Feb. 8 performance will include Hector Berlioz’s “Le Corsaire, Op. 21,” Bela Bartók’s “Concerto for Orchestra” and Christopher Rouse’s “Violin Concerto,” featuring world-renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin, professor of violin at the Shepherd School.

The Feb. 13 performance will include encores of the Rouse and Bartók pieces in addition to a performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43,” featuring internationally celebrated pianist Jon Kimura Parker, professor of piano at the Shepherd School.

Both performances are free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

The orchestra will depart on its East Coast tour Feb. 14, with performances scheduled at Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall Feb. 15 and New York’s Carnegie Hall Feb. 18.
