Rice University’s Shepherd School East Coast tour to include Carnegie, Meyerhoff halls

HOUSTON – (Feb. 6, 2014) – Rice University’s Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra will embark on its first-ever East Coast tour with debut performances at Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall Feb. 15 and New York City’s Carnegie Hall Feb. 18.

Larry Rachleff, director of orchestras for Rice’s Shepherd School of Music and the Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Music, will conduct the orchestra. Both programs will include Berlioz’s “Le corsaire, Op. 21″ and Bartók’s “Concerto for Orchestra.” In addition, the Baltimore program will feature internationally celebrated pianist Jon Kimura Parker, professor of piano, in Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43,” and the New York performance will feature world-renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin, professor of violin, in Christopher Rouse’s “Violin Concerto.”

Both pieces of music featuring Shepherd School faculty soloists were selected specifically with the performer and venue in mind. The Rachmaninoff piece first premiered in Baltimore in 1934 with Rachmaninoff himself performing as the soloist, and the orchestra’s performance will mark the 80th anniversary of the world premiere. The Rouse composition was written especially for Lin, who gave its world premiere at the Aspen Music Festival in 1991. Rouse, the composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, will attend the orchestra’s Feb. 18 performance at Carnegie Hall.

Founded in 1975, the Shepherd School is one of the nation’s youngest major university-level music programs. In its short history, the school has built one of the nation’s pre-eminent orchestral programs under the artistic direction of Rachleff. Having amassed a premier group of artist-teachers, the school attracts the nation’s most promising young musicians in training.
