Former NBC correspondent on science policy and the media

For 38 years, Robert Bazell made his mark as an award-winning journalist, serving most recently as the chief science and health correspondent at NBC News. Now Bazell is forging a new path in academia as a nonresident fellow in science and technology policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and as an adjunct faculty member at Yale University in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.

Bazell visited Rice this month to meet with students, faculty and staff and exchange ideas with Baker Institute Science and Technology Program colleagues Neal Lane, Rice’s Malcolm Gillis University Professor and senior fellow in science and technology policy, and Kirstin Matthews, fellow in science and technology policy. He spoke to two classes and the Baker Institute’s Associate Roundtable, the institute’s young-professionals group, about such topics as the rise of cancer rates, the high cost of pharmaceuticals development and the continued potential of the Internet to revolutionize the dissemination of scientific information.
