Advancing civic science in America topic at Rice’s Baker Institute April 1

HOUSTON – (March 26, 2014) – Three eminent civic scientists will discuss the current state of science in America at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy April 1. This Baker Institute Civic Scientist Lecture Series event is open to the public.

Who: Neal Lane, senior fellow in science and technology policy at the Baker Institute and former science adviser to President Bill Clinton; Dr. John Mendelsohn, the L.E. and Virginia Simmons Fellow in Health and Technology Policy and former president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and Rice alumnus David Eagleman, director of Baylor College of Medicine’s Laboratory for Perception and Action and New York Times best-selling author.

What: “Advancing Civic Science in America” panel.

When: Tuesday, April 1, 4-5:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

Where: Rice University, Baker Hall, Kelly International Conference Facility, 6100 Main St.

The panelists will discuss topics such as scientific research; science, technology, engineering and mathematics education; and science funding; they have expertise and extensive involvement in engaging the public and decision-makers on these matters. Following the panel, audience members will be encouraged to share their thoughts and engage in discussion with the panelists.

The event, which is part of the Shell Distinguished Lecture Series, is co-hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program, the Baker Institute Student Forum and Rice Empower.
