Rice alumna Lisa Thompson ’90 won the women’s visually impaired division of the 2014 Boston Marathon April 21.
She finished the 26.2-mile race in 3:50:23.
“Not really so proud of my time,” she said. “[It] was a rough race, but it is all about who shows up. I ran in 2013 and was second in the visually impaired division with a time of 3:21 … and missed the bomb by 20 minutes.”
During last year’s Boston Marathon, two bombs exploded near the finish line and killed three people and injured more than 200.
“The crowd support is always phenomenal in Boston and was off the charts this year,” Thompson said. “Terrorism is destructive through physical injuries and death and massive economic harm. Everyone in Boston and in last year’s race was affected by the bombing. It was inspiring to see some bombing survivors participating in this year’s race and just seeing that everyone came back to pay homage and enjoy Patriots Day and the marathon as they always have. Having an American win the men’s division this year was icing on the cake.”
Thompson is a resident of Houston. She has a B.A. in German from Rice.
Following last year’s bombing, my daughter and I were determined to run this year’s Boston Marathon. We finished together despite my daughter suffering a fracture of her right foot just before the halfway point. As Lisa Thompson said, the crowds along the entire route were hugely supportive. I am hoping to qualify for next year’s Boston Marathon to repeat the fantastic experience.
