Almost 30 years ago, a group of scientists conducting experiments in a Rice University lab made a discovery that changed the face of science and technology. Their discovery of C-60, or buckminsterfullerene, launched the field of nanotechnology and earned three of the researchers — Richard Smalley, Robert Curl ’54 and Harold Kroto — a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Recently Curl and Kroto were reunited on campus and recounted their experience in 1985.
