Rice community mourns loss of FE&P’s John Laxen

John Laxen

Laxen began his career at Rice in 1978 as an electrician in FE&P. Throughout his 36 years at Rice he was known for his commitment to the university and great customer service.

Rice University centennial historian Melissa Kean described Laxen as a beloved campus fixture with a breadth of institutional knowledge and eager willingness to help.

“He knew this campus like the back of his hand and he was kind, generous and funny,” Kean said. “He helped me whenever he could, and every single time I saw him I was glad of it.”

Laxen is survived by wife, Mary Laxen, and sons Shane Laxen and Cory Laxen, who is a Rice alum from the Class of 2006.

A memorial service was held Sept. 13 at Advantage Howard-Glendale Chapel.
