Rice United Way Campaign is 39 percent of goal

At the end of the second week of Rice’s 2014 United Way Campaign, pledges and contributions total nearly $78,000 — 39 percent of the $200,000 goal. Currently, the Finance Division leads the campus in funds raised with $6,673, and Public Affairs leads in participation, with 26 percent.  To date, Rice employees who have increased their pledges over last year’s amount have claimed nearly $15,000 of dollar-for-dollar matching funds from Rice board chairman Bobby Tudor and his wife Phoebe, and that limited time offer continues, so if you haven’t yet, pledge today at rice.edu/unitedway.

Rice staff and faculty who contribute to United Way not only help the entire Houston community, but they also support the university’s Vision for the Second Century commitment to positively engaging with the city. And when the resources of all Rice donors are combined with the oversight and expertise of United Way, Rice contributions have a greater economic impact. Individually, and together, Rice’s gifts to United Way make a positive difference in people’s lives and in the quality of living in the university’s home city.

United Way provides the social safety net for the community. Trained volunteers measure program investments against quality standards, make on-site visits, study issues and make recommendations so that every program is well run, efficient and successful. Each year, United Way touches nearly one out of every two lives in the community.

Employees may make a pledge payable by payroll deductions spread over all paychecks in calendar (and tax) year 2015 by logging in at esther.rice.edu and clicking the “United Way” link to authorize a direct payroll contribution, or use the pledge form on the Rice United Way website, www.rice.edu/unitedway. That same form may also be used to make a cash, check or credit card gift (for tax year 2014).
