Rice to celebrate Campus Sustainability Day Oct. 22

Rice will be among hundreds of college campuses across the nation celebrating Campus Sustainability Day Oct. 22, a day devoted to recognizing the achievements and challenges of instilling sustainability principles in higher education institutions and their surrounding communities. The highlight of Rice’s celebration will be a lunchtime colloquium titled “Six Perspectives on Sustainability: A Series of Short Talks in Celebration of Campus Sustainability Day” to be held at noon in Anderson Biology Lab, Room 131.

The program will feature:

• Joe Campana, associate professor of English literature and the Alan Dugald McKillop Chair in English, speaking on “Poetry and Sustainability.”
• Daniel Cohan, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, on “Natural Gas: Bridge to the Future or Road to Nowhere?”
• Jim Elliott, associate professor of sociology, on “Urbanization and Disaster: (Unsustainably) Connected?”
• Cymene Howe, associate professor of anthropology, on “Unwinding Wind.”
• Scott Solomon, professor in the practice of ecology and evolutionary biology, on “Biodiversity on the Rice Campus.”
• Ashley Ugarte, Martel College senior, president of the Rice Environmental Society and communications coordinator for Teens Turning Green, on “A One Health Alliance: The Intrinsic Relationship Between, Human, Animal and Environmental Health.”

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP to cenhs@rice.edu. Water will be provided but attendees are asked to bring their own bottles.

The talks are hosted by the Administrative Center for Sustainability and Energy Management and the Center for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences at Rice.
