Rice to host Mediterranean Film Festival Oct. 31-Nov. 2  

HOUSTON – (Oct. 21, 2014) – The Rice University Media Center is presenting seven movies as part of its third Mediterranean Film Festival Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The weekend festival is free and open to the public.

An opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 31 in the lobby of the Rice Media Center, located near Entrance 8 at the intersection of Stockton Street and University Boulevard. Mediterranean food, wine and soft drinks will be served at the reception, which will be followed by a 7 p.m. screening of the French movie “Marius,” a moving love story set in the port city Marseille.

The movies come from France, Spain, Italy, Israel, Turkey, Greece and Croatia. The consulates in Houston from each of these countries are sponsors of the festival and will attend the opening reception and their respective movies.

“This is the third year that the Houston consulates of the Mediterranean region have joined their efforts in an attempt to display the cultural beauty of this famous sea,” said Georgios Papanikolaou, consul general of Greece and the founder of the festival. “The goal is to have this film festival established in the minds of the Houstonian audience in the years to come.”

A triple feature Nov. 1 will include the 2012 Spanish film “Blancanieves” at 4 p.m., the 2008 Italian film “We Can Do That!” at 6 p.m. and the Israeli film “A Matter of Size” at 8 p.m. A triple feature will also be presented Nov. 2 and will include the 2009 Turkish film “Jolly Life” at 4 p.m., the 2008 Greek film “The Mountain in Front” and the 2013 Croatian movie “Cowboys.”

Multicultural Community Relations in Rice’s Office of Public Affairs and the School of Humanities’ Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts are also sponsors and helped organize the festival.
