Byrd entered Rice in 1986 from Yates High School in Houston not knowing if he would fit into the culture. Almost 30 years later, not only did he fit in, he is one its most important parts. “In some sense, he’s the complete package,” Dean of Humanities Nicolas Shumway said of Byrd’s impact. “(Byrd is) a great teacher, great student adviser and a really superb scholar.”

Alex Byrd is just amazing. I have had the privilege of working with him in his role as Master of Wiess college. His career for students, and his dedication to help develop individuals, not just scholars and academicians, is exemplary. Rice is blessed to count him among one of the most outstanding members of it’s community.
