Chinese artist and photographer Tang DeSheng discussed his work on the “Educated Youth” project as part of the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts‘ Engaged Documentary Photography Lecture Series at the Rice Media Center Jan. 26. “Educated Youth” is the largest documentation of China’s 1960s government policy ordering Chinese students to leave their cities, families and schools to work and live with farmers and peasants in rural China. Organized by Paul Hester, lecturer of visual and dramatic arts, the lecture series features a range of internationally acclaimed documentary photographers. Upcoming speakers will be Divya Murthy on “The Homeland Project” and “Local Skins: Reframing Archives and Identities” Feb. 2, Justyna Badach on “Bachelor Portraits” Feb. 16 and David Pace on the “Burkina Faso Program” Feb. 23.
