Author panel to explore legacy of the Vietnam War at Rice University Sept. 9
HOUSTON – (Aug. 26, 2015) – A panel discussion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War will feature four critically acclaimed writers who served in the war at Rice University Sept. 9. The authors — Philip Caputo, Larry Heinemann, Tim O’Brien and Tobias Wolff — will use literature as a lens to explain the cultural legacy of the Vietnam War and discuss its relevance to the post-9/11 era.
Sponsored by the Baker Institute Roundtable Young Professionals, along with Rice’s Veterans in Business Association, the event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
Who: Panelists Philip Caputo, author of “A Rumor of War”; Larry Heinemann, author of “Paco’s Story”; Tim O’Brien, author of “The Things They Carried”; and Tobias Wolff, author of “In Pharaoh’s Army: Memories of the Lost War.” All four served in Vietnam in the infantry or Special Forces before launching their literary careers.
What: A panel discussion titled “The Vietnam War: 50 Years On.”
When: Wednesday, Sept. 9, 6-7 p.m. A reception will be from 5 to 6 in Baker Hall’s Doré Commons.
Where: Rice University, McNair Hall, Shell Auditorium, 6100 Main St.
The event will spotlight the growing presence of military veterans in the Baker Institute Roundtable Young Professionals and at Rice’s Jones Graduate School of Business, according to event organizers.
