‘Bullied: Youth, Gender and Homophobia’ topic of Rice lecture Sept. 24

HOUSTON – (Sept. 18, 2015) – Sociologist and youth culture expert CJ Pascoe will discuss the dynamics and intersections of bullying, gender and homophobia as part of Rice University’s Gray/Wawro Lecture Series Sept. 24.

Presented by Rice’s Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality, the talk is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Who: CJ Pascoe, author and associate professor of sociology at the University of Oregon.

What: Gray/Wawro Lecture Series talk on “Bullied: Youth, Gender and Homophobia.”

When: 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. A reception will follow Pascoe’s lecture.            

Where: Anderson-Clarke Center, Hudspeth Auditorium, on the west side of Rice’s campus at Entrance 8 at Stockton and University Boulevard. Media can park nearby in West Lot 1.

Pascoe’s current research focuses on gender, youth, homophobia, sexuality and new media. She teaches courses on sexuality, social psychology, deviance, gender and education. Her book “Dude, You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School” won the American Educational Research Association’s 2007 Book of the Year Award as well as an honorable mention for the American Sociological Association’s Section on Sex and Gender’s Distinguished Book Award. By documenting the relationship between homophobic harassment, heterosexism and masculinity in high school, Pascoe suggests ways to begin to redefine gender norms that are damaging to both boys and girls, according to event organizers.

Through the support of Melanie Gray and Mark Wawro, this lecture series recognizes health as a matter of physical and social well-being and highlights gender as a key factor determining opportunity and quality of life. Each lecture brings to Houston a leading scholar whose work inspires deeper understanding of the gender features that underlie urgent health concerns and fosters public conversation that can prompt informed action toward a more just world.
