Rice hosting regional meeting on federal research regulations for universities

Rice is hosting a regional meeting of the Committee on Federal Research Regulations and Reporting Requirements Oct. 29 and 30 in Fondren Library’s Kyle Morrow Room.

Image of generic university with capitol buildingThe committee is conducting a study of federal regulations and reporting requirements with specific attention to those directed at research universities. People can submit comments in person at the meeting or in writing via a website.

Under the leadership of Larry Faulkner, president emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin, and Harriet Rabb, vice president and general counsel of the Rockefeller University, the committee will develop a new framework for federal regulation of research universities in the 21st century that addresses the needs of Congress, federal agencies and the broader public while advancing to the maximum extent feasible the missions of research universities.

Members of the Rice community who are scheduled to speak during the two-day session are President David Leebron, Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness John Cornwell and Neal Lane, the Malcolm Gillis University Professor Emeritus, senior fellow in science and technology policy at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and professor emeritus of physics and astronomy.

The regional meeting is a joint activity of the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Science, Technology and Law and the Board on Higher Education and Workforce. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institutes of Health.
