Sallyportal will connect Rice students, parents and alumni like never before

On Rice Day, Oct. 12, a new online platform called Sallyportal will change the way the Rice community networks. Sallyportal will foster connections among Rice students, alumni, parents and campus partners in support of career exploration, networking and mentorship.

Sallyportal is named for the iconic archway in Lovett Hall that graduates walk through after commencement.

The name Sallyportal was submitted by new alumnus Matt McGee ’16 from McMurtry College for a contest held by the Office of Alumni Relations. The name reflects the use of the platform as a portal to connect Rice students and alumni, as well as Rice’s signature Sallyport, the iconic archway in the center of Lovett Hall that welcomes Rice freshmen as they matriculate and bids farewell to seniors as they graduate. The naming contest’s panel of judges, which included faculty, staff, students and alumni, selected Sallyportal as the winning entry from more than 140 suggestions from students, alumni and staff. Jones College junior Jun Oh Seong won second place for her suggestion, OwlConnect. An alumnus received third place for suggesting Willy’s Hub.

Sallyportal is being designed to help connect students looking for professional development opportunities with the parents and alumni who want to get involved and mentor, as well as promote alumni-to-alumni networking. Students will find a range of opportunities that were previously embedded in various schools and programs. Ultimately, Sallyportal will make it easy and simple for Rice students, alumni and parents to explore careers and network with professionals across a range of fields and industries.
