Rice Theatre to present ‘Julius Caesar’ Sept. 30-Oct. 2, Oct. 6-8

HOUSTON – (Sept. 20, 2016) — Rice University Theatre will present “Julius Caesar,” William Shakespeare’s timeless play about politics, mobs and demagoguery. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 30-Oct. 1 and Oct. 6-8 at Hamman Hall, 6100 Main St. A 3 p.m. matinee is scheduled for Oct. 2.

Although the play begins with Caesar’s return to Rome in triumph after the war, there is already discontent among some who say that Caesar desires to be king. Throughout the play, the audience will be confronted with characters who wrestle with what ambition is and how power is used, according to the play’s director, Jack Young, lecturer in Rice’s Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.

Young is also the head of the Professional Actor Training Program and associate professor of acting and movement at the University of Houston and artistic director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival. His most recent directing was the acclaimed production of “Much Ado About Nothing” this past summer for the Houston Shakespeare Festival at Miller Outdoor Theatre. He has been an actor, director or fight director for 10 different Shakespeare festivals across the country.

Mark Krouskop, lecturer and production manager for the Rice Theatre Program, will be the set designer for “Julius Caesar.” He designed the eerie set for “Eurydice,” the outdoor set for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the slums for “Little Shop of Horrors” and the Italian village in “Servant of Two Masters.” Krouskop also has done set design for the Houston Shakespeare Festival’s productions of “A Comedy of Errors” and “Hamlet.” Heather Breikjern will be the costume designer for this show. Breikjern was recently assistant costume shop manager at the Alley Theatre and has also taught at Santa Fe Opera, Goodspeed Musical Theatre and North Carolina School of the Arts. Her most recent credits include the costume design for Rice’s production of “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Eurydice.”
