The 2015 Campanile received first place in the 2016 College Media Association’s Pinnacle Awards competition for four-year yearbook of the year. Edited by Anastasia Bolshakov ’15, the 2015 Campanile also received first place for best yearbook cover, second place for best magazine sports page/spread, second place for best yearbook division page/spread, second place for best yearbook news page/spread and honorable mention for best yearbook entertainment page/spread. This is the third year in a row that the student-run yearbook received awards in the Pinnacle contest.

Esther Fernández, assistant professor of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies, presented “’El retablo de Maese Pedro’ (1923):  Manuel de Falla y la continuidad de la experimentación escénica cervantina” at the Sixth Texas Cervantes Symposium held at the Wizard Academy in Austin, Texas, Oct. 22.

Engineering undergraduates Harrison Lin and Nishant Verma have been named University Innovation Fellows by Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. This global program trains student leaders to create new opportunities for their peers to engage with innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and design thinking. Amina Qutub, an assistant professor of bioengineering, gave a talk at the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing New Horizons in Science meeting in San Antonio Oct. 30. Qutub discussed several areas of research in her lab, including how neurons build networks, building personalized “neural networks in a dish” and linking data from cellular usage to behavioral health.
