Construction and maintenance projects planned for holiday break

While students are away for the holiday break, Facilities Engineering and Planning (FE&P) crews will be working on a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

Below are some of the projects that Associate Vice President for FE&P Kathy Jones and Bart Salmon, director of facilities and maintenance services, mentioned during the Dec. 12 Administrators’ Forum.

* The carpet will be replaced in the west end of Rice Memorial Center and the floors in Grand Hall and Farnsworth Pavilion will be refinished. The building’s secondary air-handling unit will be replaced.

* In the Gibbs Recreation Center, the floors of the basketball and racquetball courts and the training room will be refinished. In the chemical storage area, a new exhaust system will be installed, the sprinklers will be replaced and the metal ductwork will be replaced with PVC.

* In five piano rooms in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, the floor will be replaced to improve the acoustics.

* In the third-floor hallways of Herman Brown Hall, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning units will be replaced, a new ceiling structure and lights will be installed and the walls will be repainted.

* In Anderson Hall, flooring will be installed in the first- and second-floor hallways and the halls will be repainted.

* Outside Brochstein Pavilion, rust will be removed from the brise-soleil — the structure that deflects sunlight — and the brise-soleil will be repainted.

* Minor renovations are planned for the BioScience Research Collaborative, including the BRC Management and Bioengineering departmental offices.

* In Dell Butcher Hall, an air conditioning unit will be added to improve conditions in the Link Lab.

* In Abercrombie Hall, C113 and C115 will be converted into a machine shop.

* In Tudor Fieldhouse, new locker rooms will be built for the women’s soccer and track teams and the men’s golf team. A mezzanine will be built above the old pool, and the new structure will become a training room. Completion is expected by July.

* The scoreboard in Reckling Park will be replaced.

* Recreation field No. 6 on the east side of Tudor Fieldhouse will be relocated to the north side of campus so that more underground drainage can be installed and the utility infrastructure can be expanded underground. The latter will require tearing up a portion of Alumni Drive and College Way in February. The relocated recreation field should be available for use by June, and the utility infrastructure work should be completed in August.

* The Moody Center for the Arts is now substantially completed. The Di Suvero sculpture will be relocated from the north side of Herzstein Hall to a grassy area near the Moody Center.

* Construction of the office building and parking garage on the south side of Allen Center should be completed by August so that move-in can take place toward the end of September. The six-story office building has been topped out and the seven-floor parking garage should be topped out in February.

* In the Anderson Biology Lab, the undergraduate teaching lab will be moved from the basement to the first floor by August.
