Rice U. lecture series to explore creativity

HOUSTON – (Jan. 10, 2017) – Three national experts on creativity, innovation and psychology will discuss “Creativity Up Close” as part of a new free public lecture series at Rice University Jan. 24, Feb. 28 and March 21.

Robert Bilder, co-director of the University of California, Los Angeles’ Tennenbaum Center for the Biology of Creativity, will discuss “The Creative Brain” Jan. 24; Keith Sawyer, the Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss “The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity” Feb. 28; and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Management at Claremont University, will discuss “Evolution Towards a Planetary Consciousness” March 21.

On Jan. 24, Bilder will give a lecture at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies‘ Hudspeth Auditorium. The Feb. 28 event with Sawyer and the March 21 event with Csikszentmihalyi will be at 7 p.m. in the Shepherd School of Music‘s Stude Concert Hall. Each lecture will be approximately one hour, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

The lecture series coincides with an undergraduate course titled Creativity Up Close this spring semester that is being taught at the Moody Center for the Arts by Anthony Brandt, associate professor of composition and theory at the Shepherd School. The interdisciplinary course will explore creativity in human behavior and society. Bilder, Sawyer and Csikszentmihalyi will work with the students in the course during their visits to Rice.
