Will Rice College junior Kathleen Bradbury is one of nine U.S. college students to receive a Generation Study Abroad Excellence Award from New Zealand universities. The award provides $500 toward study at one of eight New Zealand universities.

A paper led by Satish Nagarajaiah, a professor of civil and environmental engineering and of materials science and nanoengineering, and postdoctoral researcher and lead author Yongchao Yang has been named winner of the 2017 Raymond C. Reese Research Prize. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the application of structural engineering research and is awarded by the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The paper, “Real-Time Output-Only Identification of Time-Carrying Cable Tension from Accelerations via Complexity Pursuit,” was published in the January 2016 edition of the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering. It proposes an algorithm and an automated method to monitor the real-time health of cables that support bridges (such as the Fred Hartman cable-stayed bridge in Houston), buildings and other structures. Co-authors are Associate Professor Shunlong Li, Professor Hui Li and graduate student Peng Zhou of the Harbin Institute of Technology, China. They will be honored at the Structures Congress 2017 in Denver April 7.
