Unconventional students at Rice 2017: Scott Filip

Scott Filip, a Sid Richardson College senior majoring in sport management, contributes his many decathlon championships to his competitive nature and unwavering dedication.

“Hashtag total package pretty much sums up the exact reason why I came to Rice,” Filip said. “Being able to have a great team to work with and then go around 180 degrees and sit in the classroom and have great faculty to work— a team more or less in the classroom to help you succeed.”

Filip says he’s aware of the Rice Athletics stereotype— that Rice isn’t as strong and athletic as bigger schools. “When I go out there and do my first event, whether it be the 60-meter dash or the 100-meter dash, and I win it, that gets me motivated to keep moving forward because then the rest of the competitors know that kid means business,” Filip said. “You’re a Rice Owl. Get out there and compete, because you can compete with them.”

About Brandon Martin

Greetings, I am a video producer at Rice University in the Office of Public Affairs. I became a Rice Owl in June 2011. Before that, I was at KPRC-TV in Houston as a special projects photojournalist for seven years, where I covered everything from hurricanes to sports. Southeast Texas has been my home my entire life. I am lucky to have a wonderful wife and two of the cutest girls I have ever seen. Go Owls!
