Ethics and Society program gives high school students introduction to Court of Appeals

Houston high school students in the Department of Philosophy’s Ethics and Society summer enrichment program visited the Texas 1st Court of Appeals in downtown Houston June 21 to hear a special presentation by Rice alumna and Judge Evelyn Keyes ’85. Keyes, above, who earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from Rice, spoke about legal ethics.

Run by doctoral students in the Philosophy Department, Ethics and Society is a three-week, tuition-free program for rising juniors and seniors from Houston-area public and charter schools who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. It introduces participants to theoretical concepts of justice and normative ethics. The first Ethics and Society camp was held in 2016.

The program received a $10,000 grant from the American Philosophical Association and is also supported by the Doerr Institute for New Leaders and the Philosophy Department.
