About 300 high school students from the Houston area are expected on campus Nov. 8 for the 2017 Youth Leadership Forum, where they will have an opportunity to interact with elected officials, business professionals and community leaders to discuss leadership, success and life.
University Representative Y. Ping Sun is a member of the planning committee for the forum, which is being presented by co-founders Rice alumna Sofia Adrogué ’88, senior counsel at Gray Reed & McGraw, and Judge Caroline Baker of Harris County’s 295th Judicial Court.
Among the speakers will be Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and daughter, Ashley Turner; Sen. Sylvia R. Garcia, D-Houston; retired Brig. Gen. Tom Kolditz, founding director of Rice University’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders; Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr.; boxer Marlen Esparza; hip-hop artist and motivational speaker Jonathan “Baby Jay” Gutierrez; and Deborah “D.E.E.P.” Mouton, Houston’s poet laureate.
The forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall.
