Rice’s Tudor Fieldhouse was bustling with activity Dec. 14 as more than 4,000 energetic elementary students from area Aldine, Alvin, Fort Bend, Houston, Humble, Pearland and Spring Branch independent school districts learned about mathematics and science at a basketball game. The students cheered on the Owls men’s basketball team as they took on St. Edward’s University. (Rice won, 91-86.) Prior to the game, the Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) engaged students in math and science activities, from spotlighting the mathematics that could be found on the Rice campus to playing games that used mathematical clues to determine jersey numbers for members of the basketball team. The fifth annual School House Mania event was sponsored by the Rice Athletics Department. (Photo by Tommy LaVergne)
