New hydrogel demonstrates promise for treating diabetic foot ulcers
A hydrogel that can help the body heal may also be particularly good at treating wounds related to diabetes, new research suggests. Jeffrey Hartgerink, a professor of chemistry and bioengineering, and graduate student Nicole Carrejo are quoted. Hartgerink also is quoted in an article on an immunotherapy drug embedded in STINGel, a slow-release hydrogel invented at Rice in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, that appears to be highly effective at killing cancer cells.

A polymer mat developed at Rice has the ability to fish biologically harmful contaminants from water through a strategy known as “bait, hook and destroy.” Tests with wastewater showed the mat can efficiently remove targeted pollutants, in this case a pair of biologically harmful endocrine disruptors, using a fraction of the energy required by other technology. The technique can also be used to treat drinking water.
