Glasscock School’s fall course catalog chock-full of offerings for ever-curious learners

The fall course catalog for Rice’s Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies that was mailed the week of July 16 features a wide variety of offerings reflective of the university’s “Unconventional Wisdom” motto.

Courses include After the Flood: Lessons from Hurricane Harvey; Tibetan Meditation and Compassion; Radical Connection: Authentic Engagement in a Disconnected World; The History and Future of American Photography; and other courses in the arts. The school has several dozen other classes in the humanities and sciences, foreign languages and personal and professional development. The catalog includes a welcome message from the school’s new dean, Robert Bruce.

“For more than five decades, the (Glasscock School) has served as the gateway to the Rice experience for generations of Houstonians,” he wrote. “As Rice continues steadfastly into its second century, our reach and impact grow throughout our local communities, our state, our nation and beyond, forming our story,” wrote Bruce, referring to the goals of engaging Houston and extending Rice’s reach and impact in the university’s Vision for the Second Century, Second Decade (V2C2). “As we look at our widening sphere of influence within this greater story, we continually recall that this growth always begins with an individual – when one person dares to be better, whether that is through some type of educational endeavor to become a better-informed, well-rounded citizen or through a professional pursuit, strengthening our economy and providing a better future for their family.”

Most of the fall courses start in September or October and are held in the school’s state-of-the-art Anderson-Clarke Center. Selected courses are discounted up to 50 percent for Rice students, faculty and staff. Benefits-eligible faculty and staff may also apply for tuition reimbursement for job-related courses at the Glasscock School. Rice alumni receive a 10 percent discount on all personal and professional development courses except the Midweek Medley course.
