Ellen Orseck, a Houston-based artist whose work has been exhibited across Texas, discussed her studio art course at the fall preview hosted by Rice’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies Sept. 5 to invite the Houston community to head back to school.
A showcase of lifelong learning opportunities, the event featured a range of free, brief preview lectures highlighting upcoming courses and allowed everyone to experience the school’s home, the state-of-the-art Anderson-Clarke Center.
Attendees learned about a variety of topics including the 2018 midterm elections, lessons from Hurricane Harvey, photography, women in space and mindfulness in action.
Presenters included popular instructors such as Dirk Van Tuerenhout, curator of anthropology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, who spoke on “Lucy’s Legacy: An Anthropologist’s Guide to Human Origins”; Alexis Glynn Latner, a Houston author and editor, who spoke on “Publishing Your Story”; and Debra Dickinson, an artist teacher of opera studies at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music, who spoke on “The Greatest Songwriting Teams of the Golden Age of Broadway.”
