US News ranks 4 academic subjects at Rice among global top 100

Four academic subjects taught at Rice University have ranked among the worldwide top 100 in the 2019 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Global Universities.”

Physics is tied for No. 33, materials science is No. 34, chemistry is tied for No. 55 and mathematics is No. 72.

Elevating research achievement and reputation is one of the goals of Rice’s Vision for the Second Century, Second Decade. In addition to those four subjects in the top 100, Rice is rated as a global leader in geosciences (tied for No. 139), arts and humanities (tied for No. 169), engineering (tied for No. 183), biology and biochemistry (tied for No. 258), molecular biology and genetics (tied for No. 358) and social sciences and public health (tied for No. 369).

The rankings were calculated based upon academic research performance in each specific area, using bibliometric data such as the number of scholarly papers published in high-quality journals between 2012 and 2016 and the number of citations for each of those papers. Another indicator used in the rankings reflects the number of papers among the top 10 percent of the most highly cited papers in the world in their respective fields.

The Best Global Universities survey ranked 1,250 institutions in 75 countries. Clarivate Analytics InCites provided the data and the metrics used in the rankings. The bibliometric data was based upon the Web of Science, a web-based research platform that covers more than 18,000 of the world’s most influential and authoritative scholarly journals in the sciences, social sciences and arts and humanities.
