Rice President David Leebron joined University of Houston President Renu Khator on a panel hosted by The Atlantic magazine Nov. 13. The half-day event was dubbed “The Renewal Summit.” The Leebron-Khator 40-minute panel was moderated by Ronald Brownstein, The Atlantic’s editorial director for strategic partnerships.
With Texas as the backdrop, the event explored the prosperity paradox: The U.S. economy continues to recover, and in many regions experience extraordinary growth, but does the expansion lift all segments of the community? And how can grassroots renewal efforts, working in concert with local government and civic leaders, have true impact in widening the circle of opportunity?
Leebron discussed Rice’s Midtown innovation district, the Hurricane Harvey Registry and The Rice Investment, while Khator discussed UH’s Third Ward Initiative, among other things.
